The Mumbai-based driver competing in the senior-most category finished 66 points behind winner Senna Sulaiman Noor from Indonesia in the Asia Rotax Max championship.

In the final race Chatterjee escaped with minor injuries when a rival flew over his head from behind. "I had a few minor bruises. Nothing of concern. My helmet came handy," said the Indian to Motorsport.com.

"The whole thing happened too fast. I was closing in on fourth pretty fast. I then got thumped from behind, so not sure who it was.

"I just wanted to finish the race for the sake of the championship. My kart was damaged badly but I raced on.

"One tyre was punctured, its rim was cracked and my steering column was bent too! Think that cost me something like 5 seconds a lap," he added.

Chatterjee eventually ended 17th in the race completing his first season with four podium finishes, including a pre-final win to his name.

The other Indians in the category had Manav Sharma finishing 22nd, while Dhruv Mohite was 28th.

Mohsin crowned champion

Agra's Mohsin created history to become the first Indian to win the Micro Max category in the Asian Karting Championship.

The 12-year-old maintained top form throughout the season, edging out Malaysia's Hayden Haikal by a mere four points in a closely fought battle.

The Indian in his second season scored 495 points taking eight podiums, including lone wins in pre-final and final in separate rounds.

The last round in Sepang proved to be tough for Mohsin as he was down with food poisoning, but came back strong to take couple of podiums.

The Agra-based driver is currently defending his National Micro Max title in India and is poised to move up to the Junior category in both Asian Rotax Max as well as JK Tyre Karting championship.

Mohsin's fellow countryman in this category had Yeasash ending 16th with Nikhil Bohra 18th, Askay Bohra 20th and Ruhaan Alva 21st.

Donison ends second in Senior

In the senior class, Ricky Donison  finished second to Indonesia's Silvano Christian, both separated by just 13 points after six rounds in the season.

The 2015 Indian karting champion remarkably finished every pre-final and final on the podium with a win in Round 4's pre-finals and two wins in finals (Round 2 and Round 4).

Meanwhile, in the Junior category, Sharma was the highest-placed Indian at 18th with Mohamed Ibrahim 28th, Mira Erda 29th and Jonathan Kuriakose 30th.
