SONOMA, Calif. - A group of drivers tested the racing surface for the first time on Monday at the new Sears Point Karting Center, and the reviews were positive.
It was the first time karts were allowed on the racing surface, which had received two layers of asphalt within the last month. Drivers on the recently completed three-quarter mile, 16-turn course included instructors from Jim Russell International Karting and Sears Point Raceway.
Racers used Trackmagic karts, with the fastest shifter karts reaching speeds up to 90 mph during the session. The day's activities were designed to test the durability of the track's recently laid asphalt under race conditions.
"Everybody really seemed to like it and we didn't have any trouble with the track surface," said Mark Wolochatiuk, one of the track testers who is also an instructor of Jim Russell International Karting. "The course is wide, fast and smooth, with enough straightaways to pick up speed and give you a break."
The Center is part of Sears Point Raceway's $50 million Modernization Plan and will be one of the premier karting facilities in the country, featuring a full maintenance center and storage. The Center will be operated by Jim Russell International Karting.
The Center is expected to be operational in March for both testing and karting classes. For more information, visit www.russellracing.com or call 800-831-KART.
