Greenwood Valley race report 2001-09-22

Years of breathing exhaust fumes may have dulled some of Steve Lenig's mental capacity, but it has done nothing to reduce his desire to win. The former straight-line racer saw the light several years ago and joined the dirt track grid. After negotiating lapped traffic, Lenig, Selinsgrove resident and all-around good guy, had to overcome a cooked engine on the last lap to claim the win in Saturday night's Micro Sprint Feature at The Greenwood Valley Action Track. Second across the line was Brian Kishbaugh, Nescopeck, while Mt. Pleasant Mills' Colby Womer was the third to take the flag. In the fourth slot was Jeff Furlong, Selinsgrove, fifth was Shane Penny, Nescopeck, while Ross Perchak, Hazelton, came in sixth and Sean Good, Middleburg, in seventh. Wrapping up the top ten were Chad Thomas, New Berlin, Bill Puterbaugh, Millville, and Skeetz Hockenbrock.

Rick Morris, Catawissa, took top honors in the Sportsman Micro Sprint 250cc feature race, and no one could have been more happy than Rick and his wife Kim for this first ever win. Morris has been working on this victory all year long, and all the hard work paid off. Hoss Uhrin, Freeland, almost make a last lap pass on the winner, but could not make it stick, finishing second. Shane Penny, Nescopeck, was third, Vinny Ferraro, North Plainfield, NJ, was fourth and in the fifth spot it was Larry Sauers. Sixth place was Ken "Termite" Herr, Palmyra, while Steve Price in seventh place was the last car still on the track at the checkered flag.

Another multiple winner claimed the right to leave the Rookie class by winning Saturday Night's Rookie Micro Sprint Feature. Todd Hoover, Mt. Pleasant Mills, picked up his fourth win and must now move up. Hoover said that he would be trying to run with the 270cc cars next week. In the second spot was Phil Weinsteiger, Green Lane, and Dillon Stein, Auburn, was third. In the fourth position was Matt Miller, Sunbury, fifth was Jake Starr, Millville, sixth Mike Burke, Orwigsburg, and in the seventh slot was Tony Slusser, Bloomsburg. Eighth was Deb Arner, Berwick, ninth Greg Spangler, Wapwallopen, and in tenth was Joel Ankenbrant, Cressona.

The North-South Challenge Tour for 600cc Slingshots visited The Action Track on Saturday night, putting on an exciting show. Ryan Smith, Kunklestown, running for the South, made up of Pennsylvania and New Jersey driver, managed to beat the full field of Slingshots with Scott Pettis, Effort, in second spot. In the third place was Rob Alexander, Lansdale, Jay Hartman, Flagtown, NJ, was fourth and Jeff Hartman, also from Flagtown was fifth. Tom Scerbo, Brodheadsville, was sixth, Kyle Reuter, Central Square, NY, was seventh, followed by Joe Funk III, Zionsville, was eighth, Rich Raidline, Pen Argyl, was ninth and Ryan Taylor, Perkasie, was tenth.

Next Saturday night will be the last points race of the 2001 Season, so competition will be fierce. Racing at The Greenwood Valley Action Track, located 3 1/2 miles east of Millville (turn right at Oriole Rd. and again right on Bottom Rd) will continue throughout October, so plan to keep The Action Track in your weekend plans.
