Champ Heavy Money Race joins Speedway Pavement schedule for 2010; Bonsignore Kart Shoppe steps up

03.30.2010 - Having seen the success a non- points money race has brought to the Russell Karting Gold Cup and Briggs & Stratton Speedway Dirt series last season, WKA officials are set to branch out to the Vega Speedway Pavement Series in 2010.

Beginning with the Spring Nationals April 23-25 at OCR Action Sports Park in Rougemont, North Carolina, the Briggs Champ Heavy class will join the ranks with a Friday evening money event following practice. Drivers wishing to participate in the event will take part in the final round of national points practice Friday afternoon. Drivers will then take part in a pill draw at 4:45 p.m. to determine the starting order for segment No. 1, which will be 20 laps. At the completion of the first segment, karts will be required to remain on the grid, where they will refuel and adjust air pressure.

During this time, a pill draw will take place, inverting no more than the top-nine competitors. Once the field has completed their pit work, the final 20-lap segment will take place.

Top five in the event will receive a 75 percent payback, based on entries in the race. Additionally, vendors and sponsors have begun to step up to provide product for the remaining balance of the field. First to contribute is Bonsignore Kart Shoppe, which has donated four $25 gift certificates to the cause. The race will carry a $50 entry fee, $10 of which will be the charge for fuel. No awards. Anyone wishing to contribute product or additional money to the Money Race can contact Buddy Long at WKA at 704-455-1606, extension 19.

Competitors will follow the specs for the WKA Briggs Champ Heavy national points class for 2010. For more information on the Vega Speedway Pavement Series Spring Nationals at OCR, go to www.worldkarting.com/downloads/eb-2010/0423_ocr_pave.pdf.

Speedway Pavement tire rules to follow 2009 policies and procedures, Vega 8.00 thin tire not allowed

03.30.2010 - While the efforts to curb tire prepping continue to be an issue in all forms of motorsports, World Karting officials, encouraged by what they saw in 2009, will continue with the same policies and procedures for the 2010 season on the Vega Speedway Pavement Series, beginning with the Spring Nationals April 23-25 at OCR Action Sports Park in Rougemont, North Carolina.

Once again competitors will be required to run the same tire on both race days, thus cutting back on major costs. With the emergence of the Vega MBS Tire as one of the two major tires on the program this year, competitors are urged to be made aware the Vega 8.00 Thin Tire will not be allowed in 2010. For those that have not seen the Thin Tire, there is a distinct difference in the Vega brand on the tire that clearly defines the thin tire from the standard, as per the attached photo.

To view the Tire Rules for 2010, simply click on the Vega oval at the top of the World Karting home Page, then click tire rules.

Tire restrictions lifted for OCR Friday practice

03.30.2010 - In an effort to give competitors time to get acclimated to the new Vega MBS tire, WKA officials have elected to open the Friday practice up for the Spring Nationals at OCR Action Sports Park April 9 for the Vega Speedway Pavement Series.

The move will allow competitors an opportunity to utilize past tires no longer allowed on the series in 2010, while slowly breaking in the new MBS tire. The effort is two-fold in the fact it helps racers find a value for last year's tires while gaining track time for the weekend, and slowly transitioning into the MBS tire as the day wears on.

WKA would like to remind competitors this process will take place at the first event ONLY, and will be confined to the Friday practice.

Once activities begin Saturday morning, competitors must be practicing on the MBS tire, thus presenting a new set once they come up for qualifying. The same procedures will be in place again in 2010 where competitors will be required to run the same tires both days.
