WKA Vega Speedway Pavement opens season this weekend

04.20.2010 - The WKA Vega Speedway Pavement Series ushers in a new season this weekend with the Spring Nationals at OCR Action Sports Park in Rougemont, N.C. The OCR opener marks the beginning of a five-race tour for WKA's only national asphalt-oval series and the only national this year at the popular OCR speedway, which is located just north of Durham.

This year's OCR national is the Pavement Series' seventh national at the Orange county, N.C., venue and its fourth annual visit in succession. The series traveled to OCR for the first time in 2000, followed by events in 2001 and 2002. A four-year hiatus ensued before the tour returned to OCR for the second national of the 2007 season. The track has been a staple on the Pavement Series since, and this year will mark the third year in a row the North Carolina venue has hosted the series opener.

The track will open Thursday from noon till 6 p.m. for pit pass sales and event parking. Pre-entry pickup and registration is open from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday.

Friday will see gates and registration open at 7 a.m. Official practice will run from 9 a.m. till 4 p.m. After practice, a new highlight to the Pavement Series will take center stage in the form of a Champ Heavy Money Race. The Money Race entry fee is $50, which includes the fuel fee, and the race boasts a 75 percent payback.

WKA is still accepting product for awards toward the Money Race. Money races have been popular additions to the WKA Speedway Dirt and Gold Cup series, and Pavement Series officials are expecting a good field and competitive battle for its first Money Race crown at OCR. If you're interested in giving product that will be awarded to finishers of the Money Race, contact Buddy Long before Thursday at 704-455-1606 ext. 19 or e-mail buddy@worldkarting.com.

All racers will get down to business Saturday and Sunday when a full slate of national classes go off each day. Practice begins at 8 a.m. both days with qualifying scheduled for 11:15 a.m. and races to follow. Twelve national classes are on the card for Saturday and 11 on Sunday. Kid karts and kid champ karts will run at breaks.

As announced last week, Sunday will see a special local option Box Stock Money Race for Clone-powered karts. The Box Stock class is slated for Sunday's ninth race, and it pays $100 to win, $50 for second and $25 a piece for third and fourth. Registration for the Box Stock class, as well as all national divisions, will be open throughout the weekend.

WKA pit pass gets you into PASS South race for free

04.20.2010 - If you're going to be in attendance this weekend at the Spring Nationals for the WKA Vega Speedway Pavement Series at OCR Action Sports Park, your WKA wristband will get you in to more than just the karting event.

Orange County Speedway is offering a promotion to WKA racers, team members and fans. The Pro All Star Series' (PASS) South super late model tour will be in action Saturday night for a 125-lap main, which is the third stop on their 13-race 2010 schedule.

Anyone with a WKA wristband can get into the PASS South race free. There is a $10 charge for parking, but the kart track is easily within walking distance to Orange County Speedway, meaning you may walk over and avoid the parking fee.

The PASS South is one of the best late model series in the country and features the super late models, promoted as the fastest full-fendered short-track cars in the East.

For more information on Saturday's PASS South race, visit www.ocstrack.com.

Temporary membership notice and information

04.20.2010 - There has been some confusion regarding WKA temporary memberships, which can be purchased for $20at any WKA national event. The following release is meant to clarify a temporary membership's purpose and value.

Temporary memberships cater to racers who want to compete in a WKA event but do not want to purchase a $55 yearly membership. In many cases, these racers are local to the track the national is being held and have no plans to run any additional WKA events in a particular season.

Rather than forcing racers in this situation to spend $55 or more on a yearly membership, WKA gives these racers the option to purchase a temporary weekend membership for approximately a third of the price.

However, a temporary member does not receive the points he or she earns at the event. The temporary member is listed in the results and does receive awards or their share of the purse, but does not get points.

To clarify the points, if a temporary member finishes third, no third-place points would be awarded. The fourth-place finisher does not receive third-place points in this instance, or any instance where a temporary member finishes ahead of a full member.

If you're going to purchase a temporary membership but you think there is a chance you'll compete in another WKA event later in the season, WKA suggests purchasing a full membership so you'll receive the points you rightfully earn.

If you have questions, contact Keith Shampine at 704-455-1606 ext. 15.

Local option classes do not receive year-end awards

04.20.2010 - With a few local-option classes running full schedules in some WKA national series, it should be understood that participants in local-option classes do not receive year-end awards. No points are accrued for local-option classes, thus no official championship standings for the classes and no year-end awards.

Top finishers in local-option classes do receive weekend awards. Local options are also listed in race results and acknowledged in race reports that appear in WKA's Karting Scene online magazine.

If you have questions, contact the WKA office at 704-455-1606.
