Rice rules two at Gold Cup National

WAMPUM, PA-For the third time this season rain ruined part of a WKA/Horstman Gold Cup Series National hitting Sunday the hardest again. This time Mother Nature's victim was the Tomar Nationals hosted by BeaveRun Motorsports Complex in Wampum, PA where Charlotte, MI based Chance Rice was the lone standout of 318 racers entered. Rice ruled both Briggs Junior Sportsman 1 classes.

On a dry track that Saturday Drew Brannon spun a 1:13.622 minutes lap on the 9/10th mile asphalt road course for RLV Tuned Exhaust Products Briggs Junior Sportsman-1 Lite's pole. Rice was seventh fastest out of 20 with a 1:14.713 run. C. J. Lintner earned the outside pole position with a 1:13.656 seconds trip.

When the green flag flew Westley Hopper burst into the lead from third. Before the first lap was booked Lintner took it from him with Rice behind him challenging in the corners and side-by-side down the straights. After taking the mid-race signal Rice spun trying to take the lead in the carousel allowing Linter to run away with the lead. Not to be done in Rice lost little time and only a few positions before getting his machine back on track and headed for the front. Before it was over he was back behind Lintner and then along side him battling for the lead. Rice got a last lap run on Lintner and took the lead crossing the stripe with a 0.856 seconds advantage.

"That was an awesome win," described the 10-year old winner, "I don't know how I stayed in the lead and then got it back after I spun. I think I had top end on them. I just kept coming on after I spun out. I knew I could win and I knew I had the kart to win."

Sunday Rice spun a 1:19.750 minutes lap for Turner Racing Engines Briggs Junior Sportsman-1 Heavy's top qualifying effort. Poised next to him ready for a replay was Lintner with a 1:20.903 seconds lap. Rice roared into the early lead, surrendered it to Drew Brannon after several laps and then recaptured it at mid-race. Hopper took second in the final laps and closed in on Rice, but trailed by 0.1590 seconds at the end.

"I didn't think I'd get it," Rice admitted after his second win. "It feels great getting two wins this weekend. Turner Racing Engines builds the fastest engine we've run yet. The kart was really loose because it started raining just before we went out. The track really changed after it started raining it was really slick out there."

Cassity brothers Justin and Ryan each collected a win that weekend. Justin beat Daniel Koehler to McDonalds Motorsports Briggs Heavy's finish by 2.404 seconds and Ryan nipped Anthony Albanese at Meredith International Briggs Medium's finish by just 0.073 seconds. Several other racers notched their first national win that weekend.
