SANDY HOOK, MD - Five Maryland WKA Sprint Divisional racers kicked off their 2001 season with double wins at Sandy Hook Speedway April 21-22.
Defending Briggs Junior Sportsman-1 Lite and Heavy champion Steven Axtell, of Glen Burnie, MD, stepped up to Briggs Junior Sportsman-2 and easily swept both classes. Trailing the Team Robinson Speed Shop and Coyote factory pilot across Lite's finish line were Russell Marinucci and Matthew Amos. Following Axtell in Sunday's Heavy class were Amos, Paul Ward, Marinucci and Jessie Morrison.
Chris Braun captured Briggs Junior Lite and Briggs Junior Restricted and Stevensville, MD based Boat Mover Sponsored Todd Wieslander did the same in Briggs Lite and Medium. Keith Jackson ruled both Junior Sporstman-1 classes. Toby Parses trailed Jackson in Lite and was followed in the top five by Anthony Marinucci, Zachary Taylor and Tyler Sandmeyer. Crossing Heavy behind Jackson were Marinucci, Parese, Sandmeyer and Tony Wells.
Grottos Pizza sponsored Super Tech powered Milford, DE pilot Matt Jester posted wins in Briggs Controlled Heavy and Briggs Super Heavy. Rowan Pennink trailed Jester in Controlled Heavy and Dale Blades did the same in Super Heavy.
Coyote factory pilot Alan "Bunky" Whiting, of Hurlock, MD, powered his way past four top ranked racers for Briggs Heavy's checkered flag. Chasing him across the finish line were Rat Powered Jace Reynolds, of Wall, NJ, defending national champion Justin Gumley of Colts Neck, NJ, Rowan Pennink and Baltimore, MD based GT Machine driver Dan Koehler.
Trey Schultz III earned Briggs Junior Heavy's win over John Kenny, IV. Ocean Pines, MD pilot Trente Robertson took third, Steven Ward followed in fourth and Dana Lail rounded out the top five.
Briggs Senior Stock's checkered flag waved for John Krieger. Robert Mitchell ran second and was followed in the top five by Rob Wells, Bowie, MD based Super Tech powered Coyote factory pilot Dave Ploor and Custy Demikoff. Bruce Hamilton and Rick Yannetta took Briggs Amateur Medium and Heavy. Trailing them in the same finishing order were Michelle Pennink, Megan Robertson, Daren Beltz and Gene Keys.
Eight 2-Cycle classes competed that weekend. Josh Fraver ruled Yamaha Senior Sportsman. Vincent Dinora dominated Yamaha Lite while Mike Amy soloed Yamaha Heavy. Paul Kennedy beat Charles Pistorio to 100cc Controlled/Piston Port's checkered. Mike Lewis and Michael Tancredi rounded out the field. ZT Racing's Robert Stickley showed Yamaha Masters field across the finish line. Josh Fraver and Mike Amy finished second and third for that field. Courtney Womack soloed Formula Yamaha and Roger Baloche did the same in 125cc Shifter.
Comer Senior Heavy's checkered flag waved for Timothy Palmatier who was trailed across the finish line by Daniel Hughes.
Maryland Sprint Divisional racers return to Sandy Hook Speedway June 2-3 for round two of their six race season. Two divisional races are scheduled in July at Nicholson Speedway in Chestertown, MD, July 14-15 and July 28-29. The Series returns to Sandy Hook Speedway September 15-16 and finishes October 6-7 at Nicholson Speedway.
