Local option classes announced for New Castle Manuf. Cup event

08.18.2009 -- WKA officials have announced two more classes that will join the weekend's festivities for the George Kugler / Bridgestone Manufacturer's Cup Series driven by Mazda August 28-30 at New Castle Motorsports Park in Indiana.

The Show Hauler Truck Nationals, stop No. 4 for the popular 2-cycle series, will play host to the Stock Moto and Yamaha Rookie classes. Offering a local class for both senior and junior class drivers is sure to make for a busy Friday of activity.

The Stock Moto class will run the Bridgestone YKC tires. Weight will be 400 lbs. The Yamaha Rookie class is for drivers from the age of 7-12. Four-piece CIK bodywork is required with an RLV 7500 YBX Can, and WA55B carburetor. The Bridgestone YKC tire will be used in this class as well, with drivers required to run 450's on the front and rear. Weight will be set at 225lbs.

Both classes will be required to run the standard spec fuel and oil as mandated for the Manufacturer's Cup Series. Stock Moto and Yamaha Rookie will be a part of the Friday practice order, which will run from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. At 5 p.m., qualifying and finals will be run for the two classes, with the top three receiving awards.

Hanging Rock Speedway Dirt recap

08.18.2009 -- Blake Cannon, Brett Miller and Dee Paschal, among others, were the big winners at Round 4 of the Briggs & Stratton Speedway Dirt Series over the weekend at Kershaw, South Carolina's Hanging Rock Kartway. Cannon took feature wins in three classes -- Briggs Sportsman 1 Lite, Sportsman 1 Heavy and Sportsman 1 Champ Final 2. Miller drove to victory in the Saturday night Animal Heavy Money Race and Briggs Heavy, while Paschal continued his strong '09 season with wins in Briggs Lite, Medium and Raptor Heavy.

Double National winners at Hanging Rock were Dan Sox, Jacob Owens, Jacob Schneider and Stevie Stephenson. Other winners included Alex Reece, Gavyn Deiter, Shannon Bledsoe, Houston Smith and Johnny Myers.

Miller earned $2,200 for his Money Race victory - $1,700 for the win and a $500 bonus from Firestone Tires for being the first racer to cross the finish line on their rubber. Cody King netted $400 for finishing second, Brad Gerrells got $300 for third and Shay Chavous $100 for fourth. The Money Race was sponsored by Briggs & Stratton Racing, Firestone and Ultramax Racing Chassis.

The "Sunday 6" winners, who received $250 for their triumph, were Cannon in Sportsman 1 Heavy, Smith in Sportsman 2 Heavy, Schneider in Jr Heavy, Paschal in Animal Medium, Myers in Briggs Super Heavy and Sox in Champ Heavy.

TS Racing offered $50 gift certificates to any race winner using Vega Tires on their kart. Those winners comprised Cannon in Sportsman 1 Lite and Heavy and Sportsman 1 Champ Final 2, Deiter in Sportsman 2 Lite, Smith in Sportsman 2 Heavy, Reece in Sportsman 1 Champ Final 1, Schneider in Briggs Jr Lite and Heavy and Owens in Sportsman 2 Champ Final 1 and 2.

Briggs & Stratton again gave away four Brute by Briggs 2500-psi pressure washers and a 5,550-watt, 10-horsepower portable generator. The prizes were randomly drawn for at Saturday morning's drivers meeting. The pressure washers went to Jamie Seymoure, Max Motley, Shannon Bledsoe and Jason Kitzmiller. The winner of the generator was Kati Leonard. Of course, a special thanks goes out to the folks Briggs & Stratton for providing these terrific awards for not only the Speedway Dirt Series racers, but Gold Cup and Speedway Pavement, as well.

The Speedway Dirt Series now has less than a month to prepare for the season finale -- the Shadow Racing Chassis Nationals Sept. 11-13 at Hurricane Raceway in Alma, Ga. Watch for Pit Board announcements over the next few weeks regarding the Shadow Racing Chassis Nationals.

Putnam Park Road Racing recap

08.18.2009 -- Entries for Round 7 of the Dunlop Tire National Road Racing Series driven by Mazda at the Putnam Park Road Course in Mt. Meridian, Ind., were approximately equal to 2008's total at the Indiana course, and nearly as high as the total at VIR earlier this month. The total number, not official as of yet, was around the 335 mark.

The weekend, successfully hosted by the Dart Kart Club, marked the final stop in the Midwest for the '09 Road Racing tour after strong events earlier this summer at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and Road America. The Midwesterners, and plenty of racers and teams from outside the region, gave it their best effort at the fast 10-turn course and their efforts provided those in attendance with some competitive racing and tight, wheel-to-wheel action.

Franklin, Wisconsin's Courtney Atkinson continued her recent tear as the weekend's only triple winner, driving to victories in PP Can Lite, PP Can Sprint 360 #1 and #2. Atkinson looks primed for another multi-championship season as a senior driver this year. She won a Triple Crown Championship in 2008 as a junior competitor.

Nine racers left the Hoosier State with a pair of National triumphs. Kevin Webb won the competitive 100cc Controlled and 100cc Controlled Spec 45-minute mains. Florida's Scott Buerman won 100cc Pipe Medium and Yamaha Sportsman Heavy. Illinois' Scott Evans drove to wins in two of the three senior Briggs Animal races, 360 and 385. Alec Meda and Derek Somers swept their respective junior sprint classes -- Meda in Briggs Jr Sprint Lite and Heavy and Somers in Jr Sprint Lite and Heavy. Chad Dokken swept CIK 125 Sprint 1 and 2, finishing ahead of Lance Lane in both. Wisconsin's Eric LaRue won PP Can Medium and Heavy and was the only driver to beat Atkinson all weekend. Brian Fisher found victory lane in Spec 125 TaG 1 and 2, and Noah Stark won Stock Honda 1 and 2.

Only one injury occurred over the weekend. Midwest pipe-sprint racer Jerry Revely, who has National wins at Mid-Ohio and Road America this season, suffered a fractured collarbone in an accident Sunday in the WKA Sprint 2 feature. WKA's thoughts go out to Jerry for a speedy recovery. The accident marked the only red flag of the weekend.

After a summer that has featured four events since mid-June, the Road Racers will have a little more than a month off before their next event Sept. 25-27, which is the inaugural WKA National at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville. The Woodbridge Kart Club will host the race. Look for Pit Board announcements regarding this event over the next month.

National Kart News magazine to attend both WKA weekends at New Castle

08.18.2009 -- National Kart News magazine will be attending both upcoming WKA weekends at New Castle (Ind.) Motorsports Park in full force, covering all three events. NKN's hospitality trailer will be set up near the road course scales and all are welcome to stop in, pick up a recent copy of NKN, and give NKN your ideas for future stories. NKN publisher Curt Paluzzi and editor Mike Burrell will be at both weekend's events to cover all the on-track action!
