Le Mans Receives 96 Entry Requests; Selection Committee To Make Decisions Following 12 Hours Of Sebring
BRASELTON, Ga. (March 6, 2002) -- The Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO), organizer of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, has received 96 entry requests for the 70th running of the event on June 15-16. Many American Le Mans Series teams are among those that have submitted entry requests.
The submission of 96 requests represents an increase of almost 20 percent over the amount submitted for the 2001 race. The ACO Selection Committee will decide the 48 cars that will be invited to participate in the famed French endurance racing classic.
The Selection Committee will attend the March 16 Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, presented by Dodge, at Sebring (Fla.) International Raceway, the opening event of the 2002 American Le Mans Series season, and will announce its choices in the days following the event. The entry requests include 44 from Prototype cars in the LMP 900 and LMP 675 classes, and 52 from Grand Touring cars in the GTS and GT classes.
As an element of the strong relationship between the American Le Mans Series and the ACO, teams that regularly compete in ALMS races will receive special consideration in the selection process.
Eight competitors are already officially pre-selected for the event based on wins at Le Mans last year or wins in two Le Mans Series races that were designated as Le Mans Qualifying Events. Those two events were Audi presents Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta on the American Le Mans Series and the Estoril, Portugal, round of the European Le Mans Series.
Pre-selected based on wins in last year's 24 Hours of Le Mans are Audi Sport Team Joest (LMP 900), Corvette Racing (GTS) and Seikel Motorsport (GT). Pre-selected from wins at Road Atlanta are Audi Sport North America (LMP 900) and Corvette Racing (GTS).
Pescarolo Sport (LMP 900), Ray Mallock Limited (GTS) and Freisinger Motorsport (GT) are pre-selected based on wins in the Estoril event.
The American Le Mans Series is a series of sports car endurance races based on the world-famous 24 Hours of Le Mans. The series will hold 10 events at premier permanent road racing facilities and key major market temporary circuits in North America during the 2002 season, with all televised live by either CBS, NBC Sports or the SPEED Channel. The series is heavily supported by auto manufacturers such as Audi, General Motors (Cadillac and Corvette), Saleen, Panoz and Porsche, with participation by Ascari, Dodge, Ferrari, Mazda and others. Races are sanctioned by IMSA.
