So Close So Spa
CRS Racing was on track in Belgium this weekend for the 1000kms of Spa. This race is the second round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup and the Le Mans Series.
The No.62 driving squad of Pierre Ehret, Shaun Lynn and Roger Wills finished in sixth place today in what was effectively their warm up event for next month’s Le Mans 24 Hours.
Roger started the race in eighth position and was soon settled into a good rhythm, running as high as third place during his run. After his first pit stop he got back down to business but ten laps later his right rear tyre delaminated, forcing him to pit early for his second stop. At this point Pierre Ehret jumped in and put in a double stint, which saw him have a clean run before handing over to Shaun Lynn in sixth. Like Pierre, Shaun had a good run before he pitted to give the car to Roger who needed a final run to make sure he had completed the minimum driving time.
Over in the No.82 CRS Ferrari of Klaas Hummel, Adam Christodoulou and Phil Quaife, the race was looking very strong until an unfortunate incident in the closing stages.
Phil took the start and was immediately up to second place. He later took the lead of the race when he passed the No.67 Porsche. Next up was Adam who kept the lead throughout his run before handing over to Klaas. The Dutchmen also put in a great drive and was running in third place and heading for a podium finish when with just five minutes to go he was hit by an FLM car, which resulted in substantial damage to the Ferrari and the end of the race for No.82.
“CRS had a great weekend right up until five minutes before the end of race,” said Team Principal, Andrew Kirkaldy. “Car 62 was looking very good in the race but had an early tyre issue. Other than that they would’ve come out with a very good result. No.82 had an exceptional race with the car leading over 80% of the time. The Le Mans Series is a big step up for Klaas Hummel this year and he drove an outstanding race. After so many years it’s still hard to believe how cruel motor racing can be. Everyone in the team did an excellent job and we now look forward to Le Mans.”
