Back on the track again

The first quarter of the race has been difficult for the Risi Competizione Ferrari 360 Modena (#94) of Ralf Kelleners, Anthony Lazzaro and Terry Borcheller, but at dusk the V8 engine is back on song again with a new crankshaft sensor installed, and the team aims to gain places during the night.

"The engine wasn't pulling properly from the start of the race, and it was getting worse and worse" explained Kelleners. "After a while we couldn't even pull sixth gear any more."

The pit crew, led by the highly experienced Dave Sims, worked through the full diagnostic routine: new plugs, new injectors, new ecu, new fuel pressure relief valve, new ignition coil, and time was slipping away in the garage.

Finally the Risi crew took the tough decision to check the crankshaft sensor, the most difficult component to reach as it involved removing the gearbox to get to the flywheel. Sure enough, there was play on the flywheel and the sensor was in bad shape, but after a further hour of toil the red Ferrari returned to the circuit and Anthony Lazzaro was lapping at close to qualifying speed.

"We are a long way behind, but you never give up in endurance racing" says team owner Giuseppe Risi. "If we can run through the night trouble-free, we could make some ground on our rivals."

The team's second Ferrari (#95), backed by ACEMCO, has had a completely trouble-free run through the first quarter and is strongly placed third in the LM-GT class, in the hands of Johnny Mowlem, Shane Lewis and Butch Leitzinger.
