Remy Gardner released from Japan, will race at Phillip Island

Remy Gardner is set to make it back to Australia in time for this weekend’s Moto2 race at Phillip Island, despite being detained by police in Japan until this evening.

It has now been revealed that both Wayne and Remy Gardner were detained by police in Japan, as part of a bizarre road rage incident that occurred during last weekend’s race weekend at Motegi. It is understood that 18-year-old Remy’s issues are related to him driving without an international licence.

But while there were reports that Remy wouldn’t make it back for Phillip Island, and that was set to be replaced by fellow Aussie Anthony West, it now appears that Gardner will leave Japan tonight, return to Australia tomorrow morning, and be free to race this weekend.

Wayne Gardner's situation, however, is less clear. All that has been confirmed is that Gardner has received consular support from Australia.

“We certainly have also provided consular support to Mr Gardner and his son,” Australia’s foreign minister Julie Bishop told the Nine Network.

“The details of this incident are being reported, but we’ve not been able to verify them. But we are continuing to provide whatever support we can while he is detained in jail.”

According to Australian newspaper The Daily Telegraph, a statement from the Tochigi Prefectural Police reads: “The suspect allegedly inflicted violence by grabbing the victims’ collars and such over traffic troubles in Hiyama around 8am on October 16.

“Wayne Gardner, 57, was arrested on the spot at 8.40am… the suspect is denying the claim.”
