At the start of the race, Fenati shot past Canet in the run down to Turn 1, before dispatching pole-sitter Jorge Martin in the following sequence of corners to take the lead of the race.

However, Fenati’s stint at the front of the pack didn’t last for too long, with Darryn Binder passing the Italian to take the the top spot.

The two riders traded positions for a number of laps, before Binder's Platinum Bay teammate Marcos Ramirez passed both of them to emerge as the new race leader.

While the Spaniard could never break away from the rest of the field and was overtaken at a number of occasions during the 23-lap race, he was always able to regain the lead within a matter of corners.

But the final three laps of the race proved to be decisive as Ramirez fell down to fourth after running wide, allowing Canet, Fenati and Mir to make it a three-way fight for victory.

On the final tour, Fenati led the race from Mir and Canet, with Ramirez still in contention for victory.

Canet, who crashed out of victory contention at COTA last time out, lunged down the inside of Mir and Fenati at the final corner, making the move stick to win the race by just 0.031s from the Rivacold rider.

Mir crossed the line 0.124s adrift in third, while Ramirez had to settle for fourth place after leading much of the race.

Fabio di Giannantonio was classified fifth, ahead of Andrea Migno, Nicolo Bulega and Enea Bastianini.

Pole-sitter Martin could finish no higher than ninth, while Juanfran Guevara completed the top 10.

John McPhee sprinted from 25th to 18th in the opening lap, but could never break into the lead group. The Englishman then lost control of his bike while braking into Turn 1, eventually retiring from the race.
