Dovizioso, again using the medium rear tyre that he had opted for in qualifying, was the only rider in the session to dip below 1m24s, posting his best time on the final lap of a 14-lap run.

As the field got up to speed with a succession of flying laps, Marquez and Dovizioso already emerged as the top runners – the Italian taking a tenth off of Marquez's initial 1m24.320s effort.

Shortly before the halfway point, Dovizioso extended his advantage over Marquez with a 1m24.103s effort, with Yamaha's Maverick Vinales – who, like Marquez, was running a medium front and hard rear tyre - slotting in between the pair.

Marquez soon retook second place and, with four minutes left on the clock, the reigning champion was finally back to the top spot, beating Dovizioso's benchmark by 0.007s.

But the Ducati rider improved twice in the final minutes of the session, capping off warm-up with a 1m23.979s effort at the chequered flag.

Marquez remained second, with Vinales settling for third, the Yamaha rider three tenths off Dovizioso.

Honda works rider Dani Pedrosa moved up from 10th to fourth at the chequered flag, shuffling down Ducati's Jorge Lorenzo and Yamaha's Valentino Rossi to fifth and sixth.

Pol Espargaro was an encouraging seventh for KTM, followed by Pramac Ducati's Scott Redding, Aprilia's Aleix Espargaro and Aspar Ducati's Alvaro Bautista.

Tech 3's Jonas Folger was the only rider to crash during the session, the German taking a fall at the Turn 4 right-hander. He placed 15th, four spots ahead of teammate Johann Zarco.
