Early on, Marquez produced an amazing save at Turn 13, using his knee to miraculously push the bike back up when most would have crashed.

He lapped in 1m55.840s to top the session by a tenth from Iannone, with Lorenzo just 0.033s further back.

Story of the session

Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi set the early pace on 1m57.642s with Iannone 0.04s behind after their first flying laps. Riding on track together, Rossi’s next lap of 1m56.689s was topped by the following Iannone by 0.179s on 1m56.510s.

Rossi restored himself to the top spot a few minutes later on 1m56.490s – 0.020s faster than the Ducati. Suzuki’s Maverick Vinales was third at this point on 1m56.725s, almost a quarter of a second off the pace.

On his second run, Iannone improved to 1m56.467s to retake P1 by 0.023s. Lorenzo jumped up to third on 1m56.669s, but Vinales immediately retook it with 1m56.576s.

With seven minutes remaining, Andrea Dovizioso jumped to the top of the times with a lap of 1m56.235s on his works Ducati, which was fastest by 0.232s.

Lorenzo then took that away with 1m56.228s, 0.007s quicker than the Ducati man. Lorenzo improved again, lowering the P1 time to 1m55.977s – over a quarter of a second clear. Rossi improved to third on 1m56.174s.

Marquez takes control

Despite his early scare, Marquez vaulted into P1 with 1m55.966s in the closing stages, 0.011s faster than Lorenzo. He improved on that on his next lap, a 1m55.840s which stood as the fastest time of the session.

Iannone went third on 1m56.110s, and then grabbed second from Lorenzo with 1m55.944s on his last lap of the session.

Hector Barbera ended up fourth on his Avintia Ducati, benefiting from a tow from Dani Pedrosa to get to within 0.284s pole time.

Rossi was fifth, ahead of Dovizioso, Aleix Espargaro, Bradley Smith, Vinales and Pedrosa.

Redding crashed at Turn 11, losing the front end and taking a trip through the gravel.

Rossi, Iannone and Cal Crutchlow had lap times deleted for exceeding track limits.
