De Angelis considering World Superbikes switch

Long-time MotoGP rider Alex de Angelis says he's evaluating a move to World Superbikes in order to have the opportunity to fight for victories.

The 31-year-old rider from San Marino, who competes for IodaRacing, is currently 25th in the standings with two points in his tally.

"Every rider is here to win but, let's be honest, we can't win with an Open bike," de Angelis explained, adding that his squad would need Aprilia's help to make gains for the rest of this season.

De Angelis had been linked with a Superbike seat last year and his interest in the category could be renewed as Yamaha is set to add its name to the list of the manufacturers in the series in 2016.

"I would like to be back in a position to win races," said the MotoGP veteran, whose last victory came in Moto2 in 2012. "I think with an official team in Superbikes I can [be in that position]."

De Angelis, a MotoGP podium finisher back in 2009, made a return to the series last season for a part-time campaign with Forward Racing.

"We will try to understand if [moving to World Superbikes] is a good idea for me but currently I have a contract with [IodaRacing team boss] Giampiero Sacchi even for 2016," said De Angelis.

"We still don't know what will happen but we will try to find a good solution for next year."
