Ducati confirms Stoner as test rider in 2016

The news follows hot on the heels of Honda's announcement that the Australian will depart the Japanese manufacturer at the end of the year, putting an end to a five-year partnership that yielded the 2011 MotoGP title and 15 race wins.

Stoner first joined Ducati in 2007, winning the Italian marque's first and so far only premier class title that season, and took a total of 23 victories in four seasons with the team.

"It’s been a great journey with HRC over the last five years, winning the World Championship in 2011 was obviously a high point and I've made many friends and formed lasting relationships along the way," said Stoner.

"I have so many great memories working with the people and the brand of Ducati and the opportunity to work with them again is something very special.

"[Team boss] Gigi Dall'Igna has brought with him a new approach and I'm looking forward to assisting the team however I can.

"The Ducati brand and the Ducati fans have been such a big part of my career and my life, so it will be really great to reunite the relationship and start another chapter with this iconic brand."

Stoner will also become a brand ambassador for Ducati, but it is unclear at this stage whether there may be any wildcard outings in the pipeline during the 2016 season.

The team has already confirmed Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone as its two race riders for the upcoming season.
