Getting to know ... L.P. Dumoulin

How long have you been racing and what was the first race you competed in and what kind of car did you drive?

I started racing on ice, actually on a lake, in a Renault 5. We had no money for karting. My dad had bought some cars at the scrap yard and we were fixing them after school. My dad, brother and I were going on the lake with friends during the weekends and that’s when we were racing on ice.

How long have you been competing in the NASCAR Pinty's Series?

I have been competing in the NASCAR Pinty’s Series since 2009. I have done the full season in 2012 for the first time after winning the Rookie Championship in 2011. I have been doing five full seasons since 2012 and as you all know it, we just signed another two-year contract with WeatherTech Canada.

What made you decide to compete in the NPS?

I have done a lot of different kinds of racing, from Formula Ford to Formula 2000, Formula Atlantic, and Endurance Racing with BMW's, Porsche and Ferrari and Daytona Prototypes, without forgetting the Rolex Series. I decided at some point to switch to NASCAR Canada obviously because it is a very competitive Series.

What makes being a part of the NPS special to you?

I just love the type of racing that NASCAR offers and it really takes diligent care of the teams. The NASCAR Pinty’s Series helps you out (drivers and sponsors) for a win-win relationship as the exposure of the sponsors is put forward.

How have your fans responded to you being a part of NASCAR in Canada?

The fans love it. They have always been there and supported me since the beginning of my career. Without fans, we would not have any series. They are super important and on top of it, they are very loyal to their drivers. For instance, a lot of people are telling me that they have WeatherTech FloorLiners in their car. It is an overwhelming feeling to know that these people are supporting me no matter what and I just want to give it back to them by winning more races and championships.

What or where is your favorite track on the schedule?

Let’s go with two favorite tracks…They are all fun but Trois-Rivières is my hometown and it is always a great weekend, especially because of all the fans on site. It is a great feeling to be part of the Grand Prix Trois-Rivières (GP3R) every year. Everybody is there, my friends, family and fans. The Canadian Tire Motorsport Park is a ton of fun for the drivers as well as it is a super-fast track. The competition for those kind of cars is fun.

On oval track, I would say that Riverside is my favorite. It is like a little Bristol, you can roll a lot of speed in the corners. Let’s not forget the Grand Prix of Toronto which is also a lot of fun.

Do you have any hobbies outside of racing?

I love playing cards with my friends and family and go on pontoons on the lake. Training is also an important part of my life with all the benefits it brings me.

If you weren't a race car driver, what do you think you would do instead of racing for a career?

I would probably still be working in the sport industry, maybe as a mental coach or an agent. I would practice other sports for sure. I just love competition and that’s the industry I’m comfortable in.

Who has been the biggest influence in your life and/or racing career?

In racing of course it's Gilles Villeneuve. Another is Maurice Richard a former Canadian hockey standout player. My mother had a collection of books and one of them was about this great man. It is because of his determination that he has built a solid reputation, without forgetting his family values of honesty and justice towards all. Another one is Enzo Ferrari for the empire he has built, a notable example of success.

Tell me something about you that would surprise your fans?

Contrary to my profession, I drive extremely slowly and carefully on the road. Safety is important.
