Held for the first time in 1967, the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières welcomed some of the greatest names in motorsport, such as the three Villeneuves (Gilles, Jacques Sr. and Jr.), Bobby Rahal, Keke Rosberg, Peter Gregg, Danny Sullivan, Ron Fellows, Michael Andretti, Alan Jones, Jacky Ickx and James Hunt who competed in series like Formula Atlantic, Trans-Am and Can-Am.
This weekend, the GP3R will showcase races of the NASCAR Pinty’s Series, the IMSA Prototypes Challenge, the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Canada Challenge, the Nissan Micra Cup, the Canadian Touring Car Championship and the Formula Tour 1600.
Since 2008, the NASCAR Pinty’s series has been the major event at GP3R. The Canadian series of NASCAR will stage a 50-lap race on Sunday titled “Les 50 Tours Can-Am“. Alex Labbé currently leads the standings with 346 points, only 10 more than Kevin Lacroix. Cayden Lapcevich, last year’s champion, is third with 315 ahead of D.J. Kennington, fourth with 308.
The IMSA Prototype Challenge presented by Mazda will hold a race for their sport-prototype cars that can develop up to 230 horsepower. This year will see the addition of exotic Le Mans Prototypes LMP3 class machinery, which are closed-cockpit, rear-engine cars, powered by a 420-horsepower V-8.
Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada presented by Yokohama will stage a race for the spec 911 GT3 cars. British Columbia’s Scott Hargrove leads the standings with 145 points. Zacharie Robichon is second with 128 and Michel de Quesada is third with 90.
GP3R will also present two races of the Nissan Micra Cup. Kevin King is first in the standings with 208 points. Xavier Coupal and Olivier Bédard are second and third with 193 and 186, respectively.
Fans will get the chance to see showroom stock race cars, just like their daily rides, on the track. The Canadian Touring Car Championship (CTCC) showcases cars such as the Ford Mustang Boss 302, the Porsche Cayman, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, the Mitsubishi Evo X and the Subaru Impreza STI LP400. The field is divided into three classes: GS Sport, Super and Touring.
This year will be the 42nd time in 48 editions that the Formula 1600 open wheel cars are part of the GP3R program. Competitors of the Formula Tour 1600 Groupe STCH will compete in two rounds during the meeting.
