Buckshot crew chief hospitalized By Brett Borden

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 8, 1999) Driver Larry Pearson was at Daytona International Speedway Thursday for a second day of NASCAR Winston Cup Series testing, substituting for Buckshot Racing Pontiac driver Buckshot Jones, but his mind was in Spartanburg, S.C. Kenneth Campbell, who will turn the wrenches for Pearson next year as crew chief on his Cheez-It Snack Crackers Pontiac on NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division, was hospitalized Wednesday at Spartanburg Regional Hospital with flu-like symptoms and low hemoglobin levels. "His hemoglobin was real low and he was losing a lot of his color -- turning yellow," Pearson said Thursday. "We got word last night that they had to put him in the hospital and run some tests on him. I'm pretty anxious to get back and see how he's doing. I talked to him last night and they were doing some tests on him. Hopefully he's OK." Campbell's wife Kim said Friday morning that Campbell is "doing pretty good," though he will remain hospitalized until blood test results come back from the lab. She did not know when those test results would be forthcoming. Campbell and Pearson will be a new pairing in the NASCAR Busch Series in 1999. With Jones moving up to contend for NASCAR Winston Cup Raybestos Rookie of the Year, Pearson, whose brother Ricky is Jones' crew chief, was hired to drive the car. Campbell came to Buckshot Racing to work with Pearson after serving as crew chief last year on the No. 37 Timber Wolf Chevrolet team in the NASCAR Busch Series.
