Billy And Buckshot Jones . . . Like Father, Like Son

The relationship between a father and a son is like no other. Buckshot Jones and his father Billy are no exception. The two not only share a family bond, but the business of owning a NASCAR Winston Cup team. With Father's Day around the corner, the two look forward to spending the day together. "My dad was always away on business when I was younger and I would have to say that right before I started racing was when our relationship started to get closer," said Buckshot Jones. "My parents were always involved in my athletics, but owning the race team has given my dad and I more time to talk and spend together." Billy Jones started Buckshot Racing in 1993 when his son showed interest in taking his weekend hobby to the highest level. Billy is heavily involved in Buckshot's career and enjoys the opportunity of working with his son. "I think Buckshot and I have a unique relationship," said Billy Jones. "He knows that I'm all business and probably even harder on him at times, but we share a great deal together. The entire family is a part of this race team and it allows us to be around each other and do something we enjoy. "I look forward to Father's Day every year because it gives me one extra day to spend with my children," continued Billy Jones. "Buckshot's mother and I always made their birthdays and holidays special and now they do those special things for us. We usually try to get together at our family farm, but if it happens to be a race weekend, we just get together somewhere in the country." The two Jones' agree in the best advice passed from father to son. "The one thing my dad always taught me was to put 110% into anything I do," said the 28-year old rookie. "He gave me that advice when I played football in high school and he continues to tell me that through our ups and downs during this rookie season. If we struggle at a track or miss a race, I know I can call my dad and he will point out the positive things I did and show his support. "He never pushed me to do anything I didn't want to do, but he always made me work hard to get what I wanted. I look back on those things now and appreciate everything he taught me as I was growing up." Both Buckshot and Billy were asked what their favorite memories were of each other and both had a hard time picking just one. "When Buckshot was younger, we went on a seven day trip into the Grand Canyon," said Billy. "Now, I'm not as big of an outdoorsman as my son, but I wanted to do this with him. I have a book at home called I've Done It Once and that trip made it into that book. It's a favorite memory because it was a challenge for both us and we did it together." "I have a lot of favorite memories with my dad," said Buckshot. "A recent memory that comes to mind is when I won my first NASCAR Busch Series race in Milwaukee and my dad couldn't make it to the race. When I got off the plane in South Carolina, my dad had gotten my family and friends to drive from Georgia that night just to meet the team as they got off the plane. That showed me how much he cared about me and my success." The importance of family ties and showing support for one another has always been instilled in the Jones family. Buckshot Jones has learned a great deal from his father and hopes to one day pass that along. "I got married last December and although I'm focsed on my career right now, I do look ahead to the future when I can pass along what my dad taught me to my children."
