Jones has never competed at Martinsville Speedway in a NASCAR Winston Cup car, but he did test the track on April 6th. "We're looking forward to this weekend and hope to have a strong run," said Jones. "I've never competed at Martinsville in a Cup car and I know conserving my brakes is what I need to concentrate on during the race. I'll be looking to Tony Barclay, who is my crew chief, and Ricky Pearson for some coaching throughout the weekend."
The Buckshot Racing team is still actively seeking primary sponsorship for the 1999 Winston Cup season. Until a sponsor is found, the team is being funded by Jones' father Billy. Along with owning the Buckshot Racing team, Billy Jones owns Crown Fiber Communications, a fiber optic construction company that installs fiber optic cable for television and telephone companies throughout the United States. Jones founded Crown Fiber in 1988.
Jones is currently third in the Raybestos Rookie of the Year point standings with 50 points. He trails leader Tony Stewart by 34 points.
