Buckshot Jones - An Outdoorsman At Heart by Nicole Allen-Studer

Buckshot Jones has a passion for racing, but he is really an outdoorsman at heart. If he's not driving a racecar or working at the team's shop, the 29-year old NASCAR Winston Cup rookie is probably at his family's farm in Monticello, Ga., or out riding his new Harley Davidson motorcycle. Jones was raised in Georgia and when he wasn't competing in some sport, he would spend most of his time at his farm hunting, fishing or riding four wheelers. Even his name lends to the fact that a love of the outdoors has always been in his blood. "My grandfather gave me the name Buckshot when I was very little and he was a hunter as well," said Jones. "My dad taught me to shoot and since then hunting has always been a part of my life. "It's great that hunting season is the same time as our off season for racing. During those months I spend most of my weekends hunting at the farm or I plan a trip and go somewhere else. I've hunted deer in Kenora, Canada and in Rio Paisano, Texas and I usually try to go to Hamburg, Ark., to duck hunt. This year I'm trying to plan a trip to South Dakota to hunt pheasant. Even though Jones enjoys the challenge of the hunt, he always eats what he shoots. "I don't hunt just for the sport of it," said Jones. "Whatever I hunt, whether it be deer, turkey or duck, I take it back to the farm and we have a big feast." When he can catch a break from the 200-mph lifestyle he has 10 months out of the year, Jones takes that opportunity to spend it outdoors. Fishing on the lakes at his farm is just another way he gets to do that. "The lakes are filled with bass, brim and catfish," said Jones. "Sometimes I can spend all day catching fish and then some days I can't get a bite. But to me just getting the chance to come down here is what's great. I haven't done a lot of fishing in the ocean, but I like to come down to the farm and just take the boat out and relax. I don't get a lot of time off, but when I do I love to spend it outside."

You would think that this last hobby of Jones' is as fast paced as his career, but to him it's just another way of getting some time to himself to relax. Jones recently became the proud owner of a Harley Davidson motorcycle and it has become his newest hobby. "I went to my dad's office in Atlanta last year and saw his Harley Davidson there," remembers Jones. "He is so busy with his other business that he really never had a chance to ride it. I asked him if I could take it back to Spartanburg with me and he told me that when I won my next NASCAR Busch Series race he would give me that one or buy one for me. The next weekend we competed at New Hampshire International Raceway and I won my second Busch Series race. I made sure I said on television that I was getting a Harley Davidson from my dad for winning that race and then he wouldn't be able to back out of the deal." Since Jones doesn't get a lot of down time to just pick up and ride his motorcycle, he and a lot of other NASCAR drivers have come up with a solution. "I take my motorcycle on the road with me when I travel to races," said Jones. "I have a trailer on the back of the motorcoach and it hauls my motorcycle. After a long day of practice at the track, it's nice for both of us to just hop on the bike and ride around the city we're competing in. I don't get to do too much when I'm on the road because my schedule is so hectic, but I do find time to ride my motorcycle." The rumbling of a racecar drives Jones' heart, but if he gets some time off you can be sure you will find him somewhere outdoors enjoying one of his favorite hobbies.
