Crew chiefs fined following Daytona infractions

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 17, 1999) NASCAR officials announced Wednesday they have levied the following penalties for rules violations prior to Sunday's Daytona 500 at the Daytona International Speedway.

Newt Moore, crew chief for Robert Pressley's No. 77 Jasper Engines Ford, was fined $5,000 for unapproved brake rotors.

Greg Conner, crew chief for Mike Wallace's No. 90 Acu-Turn Industries Ford, was fined $3,000 for a non-magnetic driveshaft.

Joe Garone, crew chief for Bill Elliott's No. 94 McDonald's Ford and Wayne Orme, crew chief for Dick Trickle's No. 13 NationsRent Ford -- a team car to Elliott's, were fined $2,000 each for use of unapproved exhaust pipes.

The items were found at different times during the week in various inspections.

NASCAR officials announced Wednesday that they have levied a fine for rules violations prior to this past Saturday's NAPA Auto Parts 300 NASCARA Busch Series Grand National Division race at the Daytona International Speedway.

Richard Jackson, crew chief for Lance Hooper's Lucas Oil Products Pontiac, was fined $10,000 for "pulling air from unapproved sources." The infraction was determined in technical inspection following Bud Second-Round Qualifying last Wednesday.

All of the above parties' penalties were deemed in violation of both Section 12-4-A in the 1999 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Rule Book: "Any member who performs an act or participates in actions deemed by NASCAR Officials as detrimental to automobile racing or to NASCAR ..." and Section 12-4-Q: "Any determination by NASCAR Officials that parts and/or equipment used in the Event do not conform to NASCAR rules or which have not been approved by NASCAR ..."
