Roush announces world headquarters in N.C.

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (Jan. 13, 1999) Roush Racing has announced that it has completed its master plan to move and consolidate its worldwide racing operations to a complex that will include office and shop facilities as well as a slightly-banked oval "shakedown track" in the city of Concord, N.C., in Cabarrus County.

According to Roush Marketing sources, Cabarrus County is home to over 80 motorsports-related businesses, including the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Roush Racing currently fields nine race teams in three of NASCAR's premier series: The NASCAR Winston Cup Series, NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

"We are confident that NASCAR racing will continue to grow nationally and worldwide ," says Jack Roush, chairman of Roush Industries, Inc., "and believe that Cabarrus County is the best location for us to make the next step in investment commitment in the sport and in North Carolina."

The first phase of the project will allow for the development of up to 15 separate facilities, each capable of housing up to two teams each. Roush's NASCAR Winston Cup and NASCAR Busch Series teams are located in Huntersville and Liberty, N.C., respectively. The NCTS team, along with the engine building facility, is in Livonia, Mich.

"It is our intention to develop a complex for ourselves and for other interested motorsports businesses ," says Geoff Smith, Roush Racing president, "that will provide an extremely functional operations environment with a dynamic marketing presence."

An example disclosed in the master plan of function and marketing working together is an oval access road surrounding the development, which will double as a shakedown track, creating an environment which will save thousands of hours and dollars while attracting public interest.

"It is extremely inconvenient and expensive for race teams to properly prepare their race cars, only to have to drive several hours to put the cars through a shakedown session at another track," Roush said of the new facility.

The complex will be accessible by tunnel, allowing the track to be used without interruption. Each team shop facility has gated access to the shakedown track. Also, the buildings have been laid out with participation from all of Roush's race teams.

"Much of our on-track success is derived from allowing our employees to have equity in the decisions that will impact their success," Roush said. "This is one more of those elements. The facilities carry forward much of their input into the function and layout of the buildings."

"We are industry leaders in trying to communicate with our competitors that our greatest individual gains will come when we work together on off-track business matters to further NASCAR in general," Smith said. "This project will be one more example of how an investment in a development in the same geographic location as our competitors will help all of us continue to attract fan and sponsor interest in NASCAR, in our programs and in the programs of the other occupants of our park."

Ian Prince, Roush's manager of real estate development, will lead Roush's development team.

"We intend to move several of our own teams into the park by the end of 1999, and we welcome inquiries from other parties interested in locating with us," Prince said. "We have submitted our plan, with the assistance of Little & Associates of Charlotte, to both the City of Concord and Cabarrus County, and all of us are moving forward expeditiously."

Roush Racing is a subsidiary of Roush Industries, Inc., headquartered in Livonia. Roush Racing's current North Carolina operations include the Roush Sports Group merchandising division, licensing, show car, marketing, public relations and business headquarters, along with the seven race teams.
