BUSCH: Sadler, Hendrick fast in final Homestead test

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (Oct. 31, 2000) -- Hermie Sadler and Ricky Hendrick ran the fastest unofficial practice laps for the respective NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Series at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Tuesday, the final day of testing for the Nov. 10-12 Pennzoil 400 weekend.
Sadler ran a lap of 34.85 (154.950 mph) in the Power Team Ford owned by Joe Bessey, beating the time of 154.639 mph recorded on Monday by Kevin Harvick, driving Dale Earnhardt's GM Goodwrench Chevrolet.
Hendrick unofficially shattered the Speedway's Busch Series track record, running a lap of 35.81 seconds (150.796) in the GMAC Chevrolet owned by his father, Rick Hendrick. Hut Stricklin holds the track Busch Series record, 36.131/149.456 mph. The team will field a pair of Chevrolets in the Nov. 11 Miami 300, to be driven by Hendrick and Winston Cup star Jeff Gordon.
David Green, the Homestead-Miami Speedway Winston Cup track record holder, assisted the Hendrick team during the test, and also bettered the track Busch Series record with a lap of 35.93/150.292 mph.
Does this mean Green has a shot at breaking the track Busch Series record when he returns for the Miami 300 in Cicci-Welliver Racing's AFG Glass Chevrolet?
"I think it means Ricky Hendrick has a chance at breaking the record," said Green. "Ricky's really picked up on this racetrack. Within hours, he really picked right up on it. To be this competitive and breaking the track record already on his first day here, is pretty surprising. I feel confident that we can both come back here and run real good. It would be very satisfying for me to win another pole, but it would be equally satisfying to see Ricky win the pole."
Also impressive in Tuesday's final testing was Geoffrey Bodine, who ran the third-fastest lap of pre-race testing, 34.98/152.715 mph, driving the Miccosukee Ford owned by Chip MacPherson. Also testing was Alabama driver Doug Reid, driving a Busch Series Chevy owned by Marcrum Motorsports.
The next appearance for both the NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Series cars at Homestead-Miami Speedway will be on Friday, Nov. 10, with opening practice and Lennox Pole Day qualifying. The Miami 300 is set for 1:10 p.m. on Saturday, with the Pennzoil 400 presented by Discount Auto Parts taking the green flag at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.
