Carl Edwards tops second Michigan practice

Edwards wheeled the No. 19 Toyota to a quick time of 37.91-seconds (189.924 mph) early in the 55-minute session. Towards the end of the session, crew chief Dave Rogers set a goal for his driver — and it didn’t take a lap before Edwards met the challenge.
"Looking for a 36.90, that's what we need," Dave Rogers tells Carl Edwards. "And there it is."
Edwards’ Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch was second (197.737 mph), followed by the Team Penske Fords of Joey Logano (197.444 mph), Ryan Blaney (197.406 mph) and Brad Keselowski (197.395 mph).

Martin Truex Jr., who qualified second for the FireKeepers Casino 400, was sixth quick (197.082 mph), followed by Kyle Larson (196.829 mph), the Hendrick Motorsports Chevys of Jimmie Johnson (196.797 mph) and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (196.791 mph). Ryan Newman (196.490 mph) rounded out the top 10 in a Richard Childress Racing Chevy.
Johnson also led the Best 10 Consecutive Lap Average with a speed of 195.394 mph. Kevin Harvick was second (195.256 mph) followed by Tony Stewart (194.638 mph), Matt Kenseth (194.599 mph), Trevor Bayne (194.328 mph) and Edwards (194.259 mph). Denny Hamlin, Keselowski, Casey Mears, Jamie McMurray, Kurt Busch and Ty Dillon completed the 10 fastest in the category.
Stewart completed 42 laps — the most in the session. Stewart, who was 16th on the speed chart (196.121 mph) is starting a season-high third on Sunday. The three-time NASCAR champion says he’s optimistic regarding the modifications to the Sprint Cup package.
“It has been a long road trying to get the package to go this direction, but we finally got them going the right way,” Stewart said. “I think it’s going to make it better for everybody.”
