Caterpillar to sponsor No. 22 Pontiac

Beginning in 1999, Caterpillar, Inc., will begin its fifth season in NASCAR as it has agreed to become the primary sponsor of the No. 22 Bill Davis Racing Pontiac in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, with driver Ward Burton.

The 36-year old Burton, currently 19th in the series point standings, is in his third full season as driver of the No. 22 Pontiac and fifth overall on the circuit.

It's not the first time Burton will have been associated with Caterpillar. Burton ran 12 NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division events in 1995 in Caterpillar-sponsored entries, posting three top-fives and five top-10s.

Davis, who owns Bill Davis Racing with wife Gail, is in his sixth season on the NASCAR Winston Cup Series (1993-98) after five successful years as a NASCAR Busch Series owner (1988-92).

Prior to joining the Davis team, Caterpillar spent four seasons as a sponsor of American Equipment Racing and driver David Green, who followed Burton as the team's primary driver for a full NASCAR Busch Series season in 1996 and NASCAR Winston Cup Series seasons in 1997 and '98.
