Dale Earnhardt and Peter Max Combine for Colorful Weekend

The most anticipated special paint scheme of the season is set to hit the track at Lowe's Motor Speedway this week. Peter Max, one of America's most renowned pop artists, has designed a special color scheme for the No.3 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet that seven-time champion Dale Earnhardt will pilot in both of this month's events at the Concord, N. C., raceway.

Max's signature vivid colors and bold design will replace the traditional stealth black paint on Earnhardt's Richard Childress-owned car for exclusive race appearances at the Winston on May 20 and the Coca Cola 600 on May 28.

Of course, a special paint scheme for the Intimidator has become a May speed weeks tradition at LMS. Dating back to 1995 when Earnhardt and Childress pioneered the paint scheme tradition with the Silver Monte Carlo, but the millennium scheme is a long way from that paint scheme.

Proclaimed as an Artist For All Decades, Max first gained celebrity status in the '60s and '70s with a colorful, psychedelic style that evolved over his illustrious career, producing countless works that have graced the covers of magazines such as Life, Time and People, just to name a few. He has been designated the official artist for five Superbowls, five Grammys, and he has been recognized by political leaders worldwide for using his talent to benefit many noteworthy environmental and diplomatic causes.

"After recently completing projects including painting a $167 million Continental 777 airplane and designing a 500 by 80 foot stage for Woodstock '99, I have landed back on earth and hooked up with NASCAR to paint the famous No. 3 car of Dale Earnhardt," said Max. "I designed the car to look as if it was driven through the waterfall of the Max color spectrum."

When asked about the magnitude of this promotion, the answer was, "Just as we had hoped, this is BIG," said Bill Maclear, merchandising manager for GM Parts. "We were looking for a way to broadcast our gold standard of service on behalf of GM Goodwrench Service Plus Dealers nationally. We believe we've found it. NASCAR's parade of high-speed colors in the new century has just been magnified by the entry of the GM Goodwrench No. 3 Max Millennium Car. This car's colors are bright, loud, and make the car look like it's running fast even when sitting still. Our co-promotional partners are all bracing for the success of this campaign."

"For the last six years we have had a different look on the No. 3 car for the 'Winston', commented Dale Earnhardt. "This is by far the most unique paint scheme we've done to date. Peter Max has created some unique artwork over the years. I'm looking forward to driving one of his creations to Victory Lane."

"Our GM Goodwrench Service Plus sponsorship of the Richard Childress No. 3 Chevrolet Monte Carlo has always been special, perhaps the most dynamic in all of racing," said Bill Fitzgerald, event marketing manager, GM Service Parts Operations. "This sponsorship takes on an all-new color scheme for the new millennium's first running of the Winston Select and the Coca Cola 600 with the paint genius of Peter Max. This car looks like it ran through buckets of paint and came out the other side at 300 miles per hour, it's everywhere!"

The lasting NASCAR legacy after Dale Earnhardt’s death

On February 18, 2001, seven-time NASCAR Cup champion Dale Earnhardt – the fearless ‘Intimidator’ – was in his element at Daytona International Speedway. While his own DEI team’s cars ran 1-2 towards the finish line, his famed #3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet Monte Carlo was playing rear gunner to block any late runs from the chasing pack. As the cars tore through Turns 3 and 4 on that fateful final lap, Earnhardt maintained the strongarm tactics that encapsulated his persona… but his actions in those moments sadly proved to be his last.
