Motorsport.com obtained the following statement from the sponsor:

"Dollar General has had tremendous success with NASCAR and our sponsorship of Joe Gibbs Racing. We have enjoyed a great partnership with Joe Gibbs Racing and we are excited to see what the No. 20 Dollar General car driven by Matt Kenseth will accomplish during the remainder of 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup season. Our strategy to reallocate our future marketing assets into new programs is strictly a business decision to align our priorities to better serve our customer in this rapidly changing retail environment."

The Tennessee-based retailer was first associated with a Gibbs driver in 2008 when Denny Hamlin raced for Todd Braun in the Xfinity Series. By 2012, Dollar General appeared in limited races on both the No. 20 Sprint Cup Toyota with Joey Logano as well as the No. 18 NXS car.

Kenseth replaced Logano in 2013 and earned seven wins his first season with JGR — four while carrying the Dollar General livery. Kenseth finished second in the standings that season and has qualified for the Chase every year since. Dollar General is scheduled to be the primary sponsor on the No. 20 car for 30 races this season.

Although Dollar General reported revenue in excess of $20 billion in the February 2015 through January 2016 fiscal year, the company underwent a change in leadership when Todd Vasos replaced Chairman and CEO Rick Dreiling last year.

Two potential sponsors that have been mentioned for the No. 20 in 2017, including Mobil 1, which currently supports the No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevy, and DeWalt, a subsidiary of Stanley Tools. DeWalt/Stanley rejoined Kenseth and JGR teammate Carl Edwards last season.
