INDIANAPOLIS - Carl Edwards has flipped at Charlotte Motor Speedway ... After the race. Yes, Edwards has finally secured his first victory with Joe Gibbs Racing, doing his signature backflip after capturing the checkered flag.
"JGR is back, and these Toyotas were great. I was the slowest of the group tonight but had the best guys on the pit box," Edwards said. "That's what won the race for us (the call to stay out in the final laps)."
Martin Truex Jr. had dominated most of the race, leading 131 of 400 total laps but was shuffled back to fifth after a late-race fuel gamble. Edwards, Greg Biffle, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Matt Kenseth were all able to stretch the fuel and finish 1-4.
"We've got a win, so it doesn't really matter," Earnhardt said of his team's decision to gamble. "We just had to do something different.
"I dodn't know what to do about fuel mileage races," a frustrated Truex stated. "It hurts to come home fifth, but it feels good to run like that."
Ryan Newman, Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch completed the top ten. Kyle Busch came home 11th in his first points race of the season, after missing the first 11 due to leg injuries suffered in February.
The 600 mile race was slowed by eight caution periods.
