No.4 KODAK MAX Film Monte Carlo

RACE: No. 10 of 36--4-28-02--California Speedway
NAPA Auto Parts 500

Started: Qualified 33rd (had to start back of field because of engine change)
Finished: 31st
Laps Completed: 247/250
Points: 28th, 870 points
Winston Cup Career starts for Skinner: 177

During NASCAR Winston Cup qualifying on Friday, the weather was anything but sunny in California. As for the old adage of "It never rains in Southern California", it certainly did not ring true, as rain and cold weather played into the equation of track conditions for qualifying efforts. Mike Skinner went out second for the day and turned in a 33rd place finish in time trials.

Saturday practice speeds did not provide positive results for the Kodak MAX Film team. Making significant changes on the No. 4 Monte Carlo did not seem to affect the attitude of the racecar as it should. After coming to the conclusion that something had to be amiss in the motor, Scott Eggleston and Larry McClure asked NASCAR's permission to switch engines following happy hour. Once NASCAR inspected the motor, part failure was found in the engine.

Skinner was never in contention during the NAPA Auto Parts 500. No changes to the Kodak MAX Film Chevrolet would make the ill-handling car better. It made for a long day for the Morgan-McClure Motorsports team and an even longer ride back to the East coast.

The team will prepare for the upcoming event at Richmond International Raceway. It will be the first night race of the 2002 season.

Mike Skinner quotes:
"We just could not get a handle on it. The car was off all day. It's a shame to race your guts out for a 31st place finish. I don't know what else to say. It seems we were off from the time we unloaded in California."
