Kyle Busch remains in Charlotte, N.C. hospital following successful surgery on his left foot on Wednesday.
Busch, the driver of the No. 18 M&Ms Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, sustained injuries to his foot and right leg during an accident in last Saturday’s XFINITY Series race at Daytona International Speedway.
According to the team report, “The surgery was performed by Dr. Robert Anderson of OrthoCarolina. Busch is resting comfortably and will remain hospitalized for observation."
JGR is expected to formulate a long-range strategy for the No. 18 Sprint Cup team once there is a clearer prognosis for Busch's recovery. David Ragan is scheduled to sub for Busch in the next nine Cup races starting this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
JGR development driver Erik Jones will fill in for Busch in the No. 54 XFINITY Series Toyota. He is expected to make his Sprint Cup debut in the No. 18 Cup car at Kansas Speedway on May 9.
Prior to Daytona, Busch had an earlier surgery on his left foot to remove a sesamoid bone. According to the team it "was about the size of a dime and was causing inflamation because it had been fractured" and due to the location of the injury the foot was not healing normally. Busch's surgery on Wednesday was unrelated.
Busch is one of NASCAR's elite drivers. The 29-year-old Las Vegas native has 29 Cup wins - 25 which were earned since joining JGR in 2008. Busch has qualified for the Chase for the Sprint Cup in seven of his 10 full seasons in the series. The self-described "King of the Minors" has a remarkable record of 70 NXS wins and 42 truck victories.
