Kyle Busch, the 18-year-old Las Vegas native, will attempt to make his first Nextel Cup series start this weekend. Busch will pilot the No. 84 Chevy and is excited to make his Cup debut at his hometown track.
"We've had an awesome response from all the Las Vegas folks," said Busch. "It's fun to race in your hometown in front of all the fans that have supported you all these years when we were running Legends Cars and so forth."He is the younger brother of Nextel Cup star Kurt Busch, and in conjunction with Hendrick Motorsports will try and race at seven cup events this season.
"We're going to run seven," confirmed Busch. "Las Vegas, Texas, Lowe's Motor Speedway (plus the All-Star race), Michigan, New Hampshire, and California."
Busch knows that starting spots in Cup are not guaranteed and he will have to race the elite racers of the sport to earn his place at every race, and start earning the respect of his fellow competitors.
"I'd like to make every race," said Busch. "That's the first goal, to get in. And that just to try to make every lap would be good. If I can go out there and make every lap of each NEXTEL Cup race, that would be awesome for me just because the series is so darn tough.
"Maybe there are a couple of chances where we can squeak out with a top 10 or a top 15 finish. Or, knock on wood; maybe we could even get a top five finish. But we're definitely going to set realistic goals and we'll try to do the best job we can and run every lap and be competitive."
Busch originally planned on making his Nextel Cup debut last season at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but his car failed inspection and NASCAR dodged his dreams. What better place for Busch's coming out party to be rescheduled than his home town of Las Vegas?
"I believe so," Busch said when asked if Hendrick intentionally picked Las Vegas as the track for his debut Cup race. "It's not only a great track but it's one of the tracks I excel at. If you think about all the mile and a half's like Chicago and Kansas, it's one of those places I really like and do my best at."
