Sprint Cup Series driver Kyle Larson took a hit in his hopes of making the Chase when his No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing team was penalized by NASCAR on Wednesday.

Larson was docked 15 points and his interim crew chief, Phil Surgen, was fined $25,000 after his No. 42 Chevrolet failed the Laser Inspection Station following Sunday’s race at Michigan. Owner Chip Ganassi was also docked 15 points.

The 15-point penalty drops Larson three positions to 21st in the series standings, 38 points behind the current cutoff to make the Chase.

CGR will not appeal the penalty.

Larson’s regular crew chief, Chad Johnston, missed the race while serving a one-race suspension for improperly attached lug nuts following the Pocono race two weeks ago.

In other penalties announced Wednesday:

  • Scott Zipadelli, crew chief for Red Horse Racing’s No. 11 team in the Truck series, has been suspended one race for improperly installed lug nuts at Texas. He was also fined $5,000 and placed on probation through Dec. 31.

  • Crew chief Brian Wilson was fined $7,500 and the No. 22 Team Penske Xfinity Series team was docked 10 owner points after his team’s car failed post-race LIS at Michigan.

  • Cup drivers Brad Keselowski, Greg Biffle, David Ragan and Michael Annett will all lose 15 minutes of practice time next week at Sonoma, Calif., after their respective teams failed the LIS three times before qualifying at Michigan.
