Logano has a very special guest for this weekend's All-Star Race

Brake issues on the No. 22 Shell Pennzoil Ford drained most of the Team Penske crew’s valuable practice time. Logano’s lack of practice bled over to a mediocre performance in qualifying for Saturday night’s All-Star Race. When Logano came to the pits for service during time trials, he blew through two boxes and had to back up into his stall for service. Logano finished 12th out of 16 drivers.

But he won’t need an attitude adjustment when he returns to the track on Saturday. He’ll gain perspective through his JL Kids Crew — a new program offered through the Joey Logano Foundation.

Jonah Williams will be an honorary pit crew member of the No. 22 Penske squad. The eight-year-old from Winston-Salem, N.C., suffers from junctional epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a skin disorder — sometimes fatal — which effects only one in two million people.

Jonah is also an avid race fan. After seeing Logano’s appearance on Jay Leno’s Garage, Jonah became an instant supporter.

“We met Jonah through NASCAR,” Logano said. “He was on a (TV) show called The Doctors. I heard he was a big race fan. There were a few drivers that made cameos on the show that day. We invited him to the race.

“We thought he would make a good member for the JL Kids Crew. We’ll be able to take him around and give him a race suit, give him a ride and whatever else they allow us to do.”

Jake Leatherman was the motivation for Logano's and wife Brittany’s latest philanthropic initiative. The five-year-old race fan from Hickory, N.C., lost his life to juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia last fall. Although the Logano's never met Jake, Brittany stumbled across a news segment on his battle. Jake's story inspired her. Although the Logano's were unable to meet the youngster before he passed, they -- along with others from the NASCAR community -- attended the funeral.

The young couple felt the need to share their good fortune with others and honor Jake’s memory through the Joey Logano Foundation.

Although Jonah’s medical journey has been well-documented, he’ll embark on a new adventure on Saturday. The Logano’s arranged for Jonah to have a VIP experience at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He’ll receive his own team uniform, tour and take laps on the track, join Logano at the drivers meeting and assist the Penske crew.

No matter what happens throughout the course of the All-Star Race, through the generosity of the Loganos, Jonah will be the big winner this weekend.
