Fifteen Years Ago In Martinsville….

Dale Jarrett, then a 27-year-old with dreams of making it in NASCAR's Winston Cup Series, made his first start at the short track of Martinsville Speedway. He started 24th and finished 14th. Fifteen years, 362 starts and 18 wins later, Jarrett is one of the leading drivers on the circuit. He has earned four top-five finishes at Martinsville…. In the 1998 Goody's 500, Jarrett started 23rd and finished third.

One Pit Road At Martinsville? "Well, there won't be that much pressure for qualifying, I guess. Seldom do we pit there under green, but the way I've been told about it is if you do have to pit under green, and these pits start over in turn three and finish in turn two, you're running 35 miles per hour for a long period of time, then you're gonna lose three or four laps. And if you happen to get caught in there while the caution comes out, you've ruined your entire day. But you've got to applaud them for their efforts. They've heard so much about what a problem it is and they've tried to take the necessary steps to make it right to make the competitors happy. I've pitted on the back there before and it's aggravating but I blame myself and our team because we didn't qualify better. It will be interesting to see how it works out."

Jarrett Concerned With Bonus Points This Early? "We're not running as well as we need to be. We're not leading races and not getting the chance to get those bonus points. That part does disturb us a little bit because we were expecting to be leading races. But to think that we haven't done that and we haven't run as well as we think we're capable of and to only be 52 points out of the lead, then part of it makes us feel pretty good because we know we can run much better than what we have at this point."
