Notes: This is the same combination of left- and right-side tires Goodyear has brought to Michigan since June 2001, making this the fifth straight race for this set-up at this track . . . this specific tire combination was also run by Winston Cup teams at Michigan's sister track - California - earlier this season . . . this right-side code (D-6352) will also be run by Winston Cup teams in 2003 with a different left-side code at Texas (D-6364), Charlotte (D-6372), Chicago (D-6356) and Kansas (D-6372) . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Michigan . . . the air pressure in the inner liners must be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
Goodyear Quote
Mark Keto, Lead Engineer, Stock Car Tire Development:
"At Michigan, like at California Speedway earlier in the season, tires will really only be a factor in relation to pit strategy. These races often come down to fuel mileage, so depending how the caution flags fall, teams may exercise the option of a two-tire stop to gain track position."
