Matt Kenseth, No. 17 DEWALT Ford Taurus, Race Recap Kmart 400, Michigan Speedway, Brooklyn, MI Sunday June 11, 2000

Matt Kenseth has arguably been the hottest driver over the last two weeks with his first career win at the Coca-Cola 600 and a second place finish at Dover a week later. He was looking to build on that momentum at Michigan, the sister track to California Speedway where he dominated in April.

Shortly after the drop of the green flag, Kenseth noticed he was suffering from a problem that most drivers were not. His car was loose. Crew chief Robbie Reiser made several changes that helped the handling as Kenseth climbed to by 20th by lap 96. Kenseth found himself, around lap 100, working to keep the leader, Jeremy Mayfield, behind him to keep from going a lap down.

Kenseth had clawed his way to the 15th spot in the running order by the time the skies opened up with rain on lap 150.

After almost two hours and a round of pit stops, the cars took back to the track. Reiser chose to change all four tires while several other competitors chose two to gain track position. The move paid off as late in the race Kenseth, who was a lap down at the time, ran down several of the cars on his lap because he had fresher tires.

Unfortunately for the No. 17 team, the rain returned on lap 195 as Kenseth was setting his sights on Ken Schrader and several other cars ahead of him including Jeff Gordon. The race would not be restarted and Kenseth would finish 17th.

"We could've got a couple of more spots if it would have stayed green," Kenseth said. "Even though we brought the same car that we ran really well with at California, we never could quite get it to handle on it. We were loose for a while and then we got tight. I think we learned some things that will help us out when we come back in August."

NASCAR Winston Cup Series rookie driver Matt Kenseth will be the special guest Thursday, June 15 in Atlantic City NJ for the Sands Motorsports Special at the Sands Casino Hotel, located at Indiana Ave and Brighton Park in Atlantic City. The Sands Motorsports Special begins at 6 p.m. with an autograph session for race fans with Matt Kenseth in the Sands Copa Room, followed by a live taping of the motorsports television program Racing Connection in the Copa Room at 7 p.m.

Kenseth, who picked up the first Winston Cup win of his career May 28 in Charlotte and has moved to 11th in the Winston Cup Series Driver Points Standings, is eager to spend time with Delaware Valley race fans prior to race week duties at Pocono Raceway.

"I am looking forward to coming to Atlantic City for the Sands Motorsports Special," Kenseth said of the exclusive Atlantic City event. "At the racetrack I try to stay focused on my job, so it is nice to be able to spend time with race fans away from the track. I hope everyone comes to see us Thursday night, the Sands Motorsports Special should be a great time." The Sands Motorsports Special is open to the general public and is free of charge.

Tony Stewart captured the win for the second week in a row while Kenseth teammates at Roush Racing-- Jeff Burton, Kevin Lepage, Chad Little and Mark Martin finished 11th, 21st, 32nd and 40th, respectively. The teams return to action next week on the unique 2.5-mile Pocono Raceway for the Pocono 500 on Sunday, June 18th at 1 pm ET on TNN.
