Morgan-McClure names Ifft as crew chief at Phoenix

Morgan-McClure Motorsports names David Ifft interim crew chief for the remaining three races of the 2000 Winston Cup season. Ifft comes to Morgan-McClure with 29 years of racing experience. The veteran crew chief returns to the Winston Cup Series following a few years in the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series.

A mutual friend of Ifft's and Larry McClure's, team owner, brought the two together last week. Ifft has interest in returning to the Winston Cup Series full time next season.

David Ifft:
"I remember Larry when he started. He came into Bristol with G.C. Spencer and Tony Glover. They had a one ton truck with a canvas over the back and one old race car. Connie Saylor was driving. I was working with DiGard then, the Gatorade car, with Darrell Waltrip. I was running the team then. I've known Larry for as long as he's been racing. Larry is a racer. We got together and I said I'd help them for the last three races. I wasn't doing anything. I was working the Lance car with Kenny Wallace until a few months ago. They built a new shop and moved into it. I told my wife if I had to drive across town that I might as well get back into Winston Cup and make the big money. Me and Larry have never even talked about money. I'm just here to help him for the next few races. They've got a good race team. They've got good people. He's got a good facility. They just need somebody to lead the car department in the right direction. I'm here to help. I've worked with the big teams, run the big teams. I've won 27 Winston Cup races as a crew chief. Darrell Waltrip won his first race with me as his crew chief. Cale Yarborough drove for me, Benny Parsons, David Pearson, Buddy Baker, Bobby Isaac, I can go on and on who I was crew chief for all those years. I got burned out on Winston Cup racing. To be truthful, my kids grew up and I didn't even know who they were. My wife raised them. Once they got 14 or 15 years old, they started working for me and helping me in racing. I got to know who my kids were. We raced on the Busch Series for the last six or eight years. We are on a trial run right now. If everything works out, then we will look towards next year. I guess I might be crazy, but it feels good to be back in this series."
