Because of rain at Martinsville Speedway on Saturday, NASCAR cancelled pole qualifying for the Tums Fast Relief 500. Practice was also cancelled, due to rain, on Friday, so the starting grid for Sunday’s race will be set based on owner points.
Roush Fenway Racing will take the front row, with Carl Edwards in the first starting spot in the No. 99 Ford and the No. 17 Ford of Matt Kenseth alongside on the front row.
We’re leaning on Matt Kenseth’s success here from the last race and how well he ran.
“We hope to have a good run here,” Edwards said. “We’re leaning on Matt Kenseth’s success here from the last race and how well he ran, and I feel that we’ve got a good car, but you never know.”
Brad Keselowski will start his No. 2 Penske Racing Dodge from the third spot and will be joined in the second row by Tony Stewart in the No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet.
Owner points and driver points match up most of the way down the standings, so the 12 Chase for the Sprint Cup drivers will all start in the first six rows.
Forty-five drivers showed up at Martinsville, hoping to be among the 43 racing on Sunday. The two drivers who will not race include Dennis Setzer and Derrike Cope.
NASCAR does hope to get the track dry late Saturday morning for a few laps of practice prior to the Camping World Truck Series race scheduled for the afternoon.
“I’m looking forward for it to quit raining and get out there,” Kenseth said during Friday’s rain.
NASCAR has scheduled a practice session to begin at noon, weather and track conditions permitting.
