Labontes can rest easy; others are sweating Daytona qualifying By DAVID POOLE, Staff Writer, That's Racin'

Terry Labonte isn't taking things easy this week at Daytona International Speedway, but he could if he wanted to.

By qualifying second fastest in Saturday's first-round qualifying, Labonte locked up the No. 2 starting spot for Sunday's Daytona 500.

Only Labonte and his brother, Bobby, who won the pole with a speed of 192.415 mph, know now where they'll be at the start of Sunday's race.

``We worked hard all winter to try to come down here and accomplish this,'' Terry Labonte said Tuesday.

Instead of trying to find a way to shave a few more hundreths of a second off the speed of a qualifying lap, or worrying about squeezing into the 500 with a good finish in Thursday's qualifying races, the Labontes can focus on Sunday.

``You're never as good as you want to be,'' Labonte said. ``We tried some things in practice today, because you're always looking for a little bit more.''

If you're on the other end of the speed chart, you're looking for a whole lot more.

Mark Martin focused, ready for race

By JULIET MACUR, The Orlando Sentinel

Mark Martin had one of those rare, seamless seasons last year where everything seemed to go right.

Even though he didn't win the NASCAR Winston Cup championship, Martin finished third in the series' closest 3-way race. He won four races and had 24 top-10 finishes. He felt as if he had reached the pinnacle.

So he decided to change everything.

``Nothing is forever in this sport. Good, bad or in between, it all changes,'' said Martin, driver of the No. 6 Valvoline Ford who lives in Daytona Beach. ``This year is an opportunity to do worse than we did in 1997, and it's an opportunity to do better. We'll just have to see which one.''
