LAS VEGAS (Feb 13, 1997 - 18:12 EST) -- A young stock car racer continued to cling to life after being shot by a gunman on a freeway overpass.
Chris Trickle, nephew of NASCAR Winston Cup regular Dick Trickle, has undergone two operations at University Medical Center to remove bullet fragments from his head.
He remained in critical condition Thursday at the hospital, though family and friends expressed hope his condition had stabilized and could improve.
Police, meanwhile, reported little progress on finding the person who shot Trickle as he drove Sunday night on a dark overpass above Interstate 15, just south of the Las Vegas Strip.
A $20,000 reward has been offered by his family for information leading to the assailant.
The 24-year-old Trickle was a rising star on NASCAR circles, with one win and five top 5 finishes in the SouthWest Tour Division this season.
