Labonte Leads the Skip Barber Brigade in Loudon
Skip Barber grad Bobby Labonte ended his academic NASCAR Winston Cup
title defense with a third place finish at the season ending New
Hampshire 300.
It might have ended with newly crowned, and now official, Winston Cup champ Jeff Gordon closing out season with a seventh win having led more than three-quarters of the race. It was not to be however when he was balked while leading by a car entering the pits. As a result his sizable lead in the waning laps was cut dramatically and when the eventual race made a move Gordon thought a tad aggressive, he uncharacteristically retaliated bumping the new leader on the ensuing caution. The penalty, levied immediately, dropped him out of contention for good.
Thus Labonte’s third place was the best of the Skip Barber alumni. Former Barber Pro Series Big Scholarship winner Jerry Nadeau finished sixth.
