SBRS: Barber graduates at Rockingham

Bobby Labonte had a win in his sights, but a late race incident put an end to the Skip Barber grad’s charge leaving him to settle for third. Jeff Burton and Jeff Gordon, finishing sixth and seventh respectfully rounded out the Skip Barber alumni in the Top-10 at the NASCAR Winston Cup Subway 400 at Rockingham Speedway. Dodge driver and Skip Barber grad Bill Elliott finished just out of the Top-10 in 11th.

With five laps remaining, an accident brought out the yellow flags. An initial confusion as to whether the race would be red-flagged as it had been in Daytona last week erased Labonte’s shot at a last lap dash for the win.

"A lot of the series have started going to the 'green-white-checkered' [finish]. I don't say that I approve of that," Labonte said. "For me, I'm probably not that good on three laps, so I don't approve of it. But, at least if they said, 'Hey, it's going to be 'green-white-checkered, ' or, 'No, it's not going to be 'green-white-checkered' and we're not going to red-flag it. We're going to finish under yellow' - either one of the other would be fine; instead of one time you know and the next time it's different. If it was just a consistent deal it would be better."

Daytona winner Ward Burton slips to second place in the overall standings for the 2002 Winston Cup.
