CRAVEN INJURED IN PRACTICE CRASH; RAIN POSTPONES WINSTON CUP QUALS

Ricky Craven, driver of the Hendrick Motorsports Budweiser Chevrolet on the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit, was seriously injured Thursday in a practice crash.

Craven hit the turn four wall at the new Texas Motor Speedway and was airlifted to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas for further observation. His condition is listed as serious but stable.

Reports indicate that Craven was conscious when he was removed from his car, but experienced a small bruise deep in his brain. He also reportedly suffered a fractured right shoulder blade and a ruptured left ear drum in the crash. [ESPN2 has reported there is no rupture to the the left ear drum--EDS] He is expected to remain hospitalized for 48 to 72 hours.

Todd Bodine will attempt to qualify the Budweiser Monte Carlo for Sunday's inaugural event. Kenny Wallace attempted to qualify Craven's Raysbestos Chevrolet for Saturday's NASCAR Busch Grand National series event at the Texas Motor Speedway. His speed was only 43rd-fastest out of the 45 that attempted to qualify on Thursday and will retry on Friday.

Rain postponed the first round of qualifying for the Winston Cup cars on Thursday. As a result, two separate qualification rounds will be held Friday for the Winston Cup drivers, the first at 11:00 a.m. (CST) and the second at 2:30 p.m. Ricky Rudd had the fastest practice speed in Thursday's practice at 186.974 mph.
