Wood Brothers nearly steal another trophy at Daytona

In 2011 Trevor Bayne became the unlikeliest Daytona 500 winner since Dale Earnhardt hit a chunk of bell housing on the last lap of the 1990 race, gifting the win to Derrike Cope.

Now Bayne and the famed #21 Motorcraft Wood Brothers Ford spend much of their time looking to catch lightning in a bottle again, fielding cars primarily for the restrictor-plate events, with other big events like Indianapolis and Charlotte thrown in the mix for good measure.

Saturday night the team put itself in position to steal away with another Daytona trophy before a late-race crash doomed Bayne to a 27th-place finish. The team ran up front all night despite contact with Kurt Busch on Lap 91, but got caught up a multi-car incident with eight laps to run.

“We ran well all night, but we got caught up in a crash,” said team co-owner Eddie Wood. “We were able to recover from an earlier incident and still had a shot at a top-10 finish or better, but we didn’t quite get there to do it. We’ll build a new car and go to Talladega”

The team has made seven starts this year and will make its next appearance at Indianapolis at the end of July, before turning its focus to Talladega.
