If Alon Day goes on to win the 2017 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series championship, he’ll obviously look back at this weekend as the difference maker for he and his team.

After taking the lead early and going on to an easy win on Saturday in the first round of the semi-finals, Day was even stronger during Sunday’s NASCAR Gran Prix of Italy scoring his second consecutive win in the playoffs and his third of the season.

It was also a memorable win for the Ashdod, Israel native as he tied defending series champion Anthony Kumpen for his 10th series win – most among active drivers.

“It was an awesome weekend for me and my CAAL Racing team”, said Day. “We all did a really good job to be as quick as possible here at Autodromo di Franciacorta. We showed everybody that we are very fast here in Italy. I have a good margin in the championship standings right and it’s very good for the Finals. Now we have to focus on Zolder because the Belgian teams are very strong there. I took two pole positions there in the past so the track is not that bad for us. I can’t wait to hit the track!”

With his victory Day now leads Borja Garcia by 37 points and Kumpen by 41 heading into the season finale weekend at Circuit Zolder in Belgium on October 14-15th.

Garcia and Kumpen’s chances to remain in the title hunt took a major hit as they were involved in on-track incidents during the race to finish 15ht and 16th, respectively.

Marc Goossens finished second with Stienes Longin third.

“I think it was been a very good weekend for all of us at BRAXX Racing especially because I missed the races in Valencia and Hockenheim”, Goossens explained. “I had a big crash in Venray. All we had before coming here was a very painful race in Venray and a very clean race in Brands Hatch where we scored a podium. In between we were never been able to test the car so we had limited seat time. We should be jumping high now because we scored such good results on a track we didn’t even know as I’ve never been racing here before. It’s all about track position here and 33 years of experience helped me a lot, said “The Goose”.

For Goossens it was a very special second place: “I want to dedicate this podium to all the people in Florida who had a really hard time because of the hurricane Irma. I race a lot in that part of the USA so I wish all of the a fast recovery.”

Frederic Gabillon and Thomas Ferrando completed top five. Gianmarco Ercoli was sixth with Salvador Tineo Arroyo, Marconi Abreu, Renzo Calcinati and Hugo Bec completing the top-10.

Denny Zardo Wins In NASCAR Debut

In his first NASCAR start Italian Hillclimb and GT veteran Denny Zardo made his presence known right away in the ELITE 2 division race for Alex Caffi Motorsport.

After he was involved in a late-race incident while battling for third, Zardo was much happier on Sunday in Victory Lane.

“I saw the car for the first time on Friday but with the great work of the Alex Caffi Motorsport team we found a good feeling pretty quickly,” said Zardo, who started from the pole and brilliantly answered every attack brought by Ferrando in the first part of the race before building a good gap and crossing the finish line with 2.5 seconds on the Frenchman. “Ferrando is a veteran of the Series and it was a great, fair battle for the lead. I want to thank the team for this unique opportunity. The cars are really funny to drive, they truly surprised me for how quick they are and how easily you can adapt and have a ton of fun at the wheel."

Ferrando, who going after his seventh win of the season, finished second with Ulysse Delsaux third. Guillaume Dumarey and Nicki Petersen rounded out the top five.

Coming home sixth through 10 were Maciej Dreszer, Paul Guiod, Felipe Rabello, Justin Kunz and Roberto Benedetti.
