FAIR GROVE, MISSOURI - October 16, 2000 - Tony Roper is remembered for his passion for racing. Following in his father Dean's footsteps, Roper grew up at the racetrack eventually turning his dream to be a driver into reality. Roper started by racing go-carts, then modifieds and late-model stock cars. Racing became a full-time career when Roper began competing in 1991 for John Childs. He then moved into the ASA ACDelco Challenge Series in 1992.
After five successful years of competition, Roper and his wife, Michele, made the move to North Carolina in 1997 as Roper accepted the Brevak Racing ride in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Roper finished 18th in points in his first full season. After leaving Brevak Racing in mid-June of 1998, Roper took the wheel of the Gloy-Rahal machine and recorded his Series'-best finish with the team - second at Indianapolis Raceway Park.
Roper advanced yet again, this time to the NASCAR Busch Series, competing in a partial schedule for IWX Motorsports in 1999. Roper collected three top-ten finishes in only 16 events. This year Roper began the season with Washington-Irving Motorsports, driving the #50 Dr. Pepper Chevrolet.
"Even while he experienced the challenges every driver faces, Tony never let go of his dream," described Michele Roper. He loved the thrill of competition, but even more so he loved the racing family. Whether it was ASA or NASCAR, Tony appreciated the importance of teamwork and knew he couldn't fulfill his dream without the help of those around him. That's why it means so much to me and Tony's family that we've already received so many expressions of support and kindness. Tony was loved by so many and he will always hold a special place in our hearts."
