Brewco continues "youth movement" with Grubb By Dave Rodman

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (Nov. 15, 1998) Brewco Motorsports Sunday confirmed its two-car "youth movement" for the 1999 NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division when it announced 20-year-old Kevin Grubb would drive its No. 37 Timber Wolf Chevrolet next season.

Team owner Clarence Brewer Jr. announced at the Miami-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex that his current two-driver team would average 19 years of age. Grubb, a NASCAR Late Model Stock Car veteran from Mechanicsville, Va., joins 18-year-old Casey Atwood, the Bud Pole winner for Sunday's Jiffy Lube Miami 300.

Brewer said Atwood would drive the No. 27 Brewco Chevrolet. He said the team's sponsor had been signed and would be announced within the next two weeks, probably, he indicated, at the Performance Racing Industry show in early December in Indianapolis. A team representative said coordinating the sponsor's driver roster was the hold-up.

"There's no doubt in my mind that they're the best, most talented young drivers on the Busch Grand National circuit," Brewer said of his initial two signees. "Everybody's seen them week after week and they've proven that point. If my nerves can stand it, we'll be in good shape. " Brewer has proven to be a patient owner but despite the youth of his drivers he's expecting performance as well.

"I look at agreements not in length of time, really," said Brewer of his deal with Grubb, whose older brother, Wayne, drove the family car in the Jiffy Lube 300. "If we both have a good year, we're in it for a long time together. I don't like setting a time limit on a relationship.

"We're glad to have Kevin on board. We've been watching him for the past few months. I think it's always easier to hold somebody back than to push them forward, and I think Kevin's that type. I don't think we'll have any problem with him moving forward on his own."

Grubb competed in 18 NASCAR Busch Series races this season, with one Bud Pole, two top-five and five top-10 finishes in a variety of cars. Since 1997, Grubb, who has also dabbled in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, has made 22 career NBS starts.

Before joining the NASCAR Busch Series, Grubb competed from 1995-1997 in the NASCAR LMSC division at South Boston (Va.) Speedway and Southside Speedway outside Richmond, Va. In 1997, Grubb won 13 LMSC races.

"When I joined the NASCAR Busch Series in 1997, my goal was to earn the respect and experience that would allow me to compete full-time, and to get out on my own," said Grubb, who until now has raced primarily for his family Grubb Motorsports team. "I've had several solid runs and know I can be competitive in the right situation."
